Module III Part III

Separate But Not Equal (Video 2) - Cognia - The Source

After thinking about the section, what I read, what I discussed as a group and the visual representation I

created in my collaborative project, the term "separate but equal" should not be a recommended viable

option in education today. I first say that because for example, if we are separate but equal, the minorities

in school systems would not feel like they were being treated equal if they are separated simply just by

color. On the flip side, in today's society, maybe some African Americans and other colored people just

feel more comfortable surrounding themselves around people whose appearance looks more like theirs,

thus having friends with the same and similar skin color. People who do not have the most diverse friend

group, could benefit from having a separate but equal education. In the beginning of the section, it states

that "In 1950, though it was often dangerous, and in seventeen states illegal, for ethnic minorities to

attend so called white-public schools, the promise of American public education held a special place in

the hearts and minds of citizens across the nation." This statement alone already demonstrates that the

education system was starting to go into a racial standpoint, when schooling should just be solely focused

on education students, ALL TYPES of students. Richard White also stated that any good history begins

with strangeness. "The past should be so strange that you wonder how you and people you know and love

could come from such a time." This quote is very strong in the fact that it is very relatable to America.

Throughout history in the United States, there has been so much negativity and violence about opinions

and a lot of people just act of emotion without logically thinking or pursuing anything, just like the

educational school system. Americans were so fixated on the fact that some of their children would be

going to school with kids of different descent, shouldn't they be worried about how well of an education

they should be getting ? Or if they are doing good in school ?

In my opinion, I believe that this is a course we should pursue as a society. I say that because it is

intriguing to learn about how education was created and how much it has grown to what it is now. I also

feel like it is very important to know your roots and what your ancestors had to go through so that people l

like me, African Americans, can walk the path that we do now. Learning the multiple battles African

Americans had to face and go through to attain a proper education is very admirable and inspiring.

However, not just the history about African Americans, the history about education in general is

something that everyone should know and be open to. I also believe that this course is important to pursue

as a society because reading throughout the section, you can start to become grateful for an education and

begin to be grateful for something that we regularly take for granted. I remember growing up, I would

hate going to school, like most people do. But as I continue to learn and understand that education is one

of the most important aspects there is to life, I am beginning to understand to education is a gift to

humans. Education can take people far in life and the more knowledge you have, the more powerful you

can be.
